Can I convert a CRV to LPG

Dear Scotty and community,

I'm searching to buy a 2nd hand CRV 02/06 in Europe and have some questions and worries.

The benzine model 2.0L , as 2.4 are quite rare here, is way too thirsty for European economy, for my budget, especially that I will want to do long trips with the car, not only fun dirt rides. I am considering and LPG conversion, and some second hand do pop up with a conversion already done.

What is your experience with LPG conversions? Anyone has had a 2.0 CRV with LPG? Will this damage the engine and basically I might be buying junk?

Extra questions:

1. What problems should I look for?

2. What OBD tool should I get to check for hidden problems (the ones advertised by Kilmer are for US market and the companies did reply to me they would not work, including BlueDriver).

3. How much would you pay for it? I'm going for something up to 190k km, not over.

4. Any other recommendations?

Best,

A

The benzine model

Wow there's a term I haven't heard in a while. Most people say gasoline or petrol now.

the issue I see is that modern cars have gotten more complex. Engines are tightly controlled by sensors and computers. Such a conversion might require a lot of modification, making it impractical. Have you tried talking to companies who actually install LPG conversion? Seems like the best place to get an accurate asnwer.

Did you give up on wanting a diesel car? Seems like a popular option in Europe.

You will need a tool designed to work with European models.

Have you checked our FAQ on the front page? We have a whole article about scanners. I see at least one which claims to work. (MaxiCheck MX900).

I don't think Scotty will know.

@imperator installing LPG to a diesel engine costs more than converting a gasoline car. Perhaps that is why he quit the idea

@imperator Well the idea of talking with companies that actually do these conversions, seem a bit redundant no? They will say ''yes, yes, its great'', it's what they sell. It's kinda what Scotty advises against most of the time in his videos.

About the OBDII, forgot to say the keyword ''on a budget''. I wrote to most companies listed in the FAQ, all offering me, of course, 500$/£/etc. + models.

@g-t Expensive and not legal everywhere across Europe, have no idea which countries allow it.

not redundant at all. You lose nothing except a bit of your time by asking.

CRV 02/06

2nd or 3rd generation?

@g-t 2nd and 2.5 gen, those are between 2002-2006.

Thanks for answer. 3rd gen. went into production in 2006

@g-t At least in Europe you will never find a 3rd gen from 2006. Maybe the UK factory started later.

I'm talking about years of production, not model years. I thought you are looking also for imported ones as you mentioned 2.4 petrol engine. That one was not avaliable for European market.
