I just bought a 2005 CRV. Everything checked out but I have this whine. I researched and the most common problem seemed to be from the O rings in the power steering pump. My local mechanic confirmed this is a test drive and using a stethoscope. We both noticed that there was a bolt missing on the forward part of the pump so he changed the O rings on both the intake and outtake of the pump but we didn't have a bolt for the forward pump flange. and we totally changed the fluid to Honda PS fluid. I sort of expected that the whine would go away but it hasn't. I have only driven under 10 miles after the fix. My mechanic said the missing bolt should not be a problem and said it may have air in the line since we replaced the PS fluid and that it should go away after I've driven it more. Is this true or should I order this bolt?
I can't see a missing bolt causing whine. That said, your mechanic should have been able to make sure no air got in the line when he changed the fluid. Maybe not the top of his class to be honest.
I would drive it 100 miles or so, see what happens. If it is still whining I would take it to a different mechanic and explain what the situation is.
@mod_man
And thank you very much for your advice.
Unfortunately I live in the country with few choices. My son works at a Honda dealership so I'll see if he can get one of the mechanics that has seen this before to offer some advice over email. They're in Montana and I'm in the Ozarks. Did 125 miles today and no change. Crossed my mind that the mechanic may not have lubricated the seals. I'll probably just remove the connections and start over unless one of the Honda mechanics tells me of an additive I've heard a bit about.
