Hello my fellow dear Previous Texas neighbor !

Scotty, please help me here !

What would be the newest CRV to buy with the excellent 4 cylinder engine you have recommended in the channel ?

Or, in other words…. What’s the newest CRV used to buy that you feel confide don’t have all this new engine crap.

I have been a hard core Toyota fan, multiple 4Runner, multiple Highlanders, multiple Land Cruisers,  two Lexus…. Currently with a Land Cruiser from 2013 but it is a mileage burn as you already know.  Another Highlander would be awesome too but don’t even know if the latest models which one is the best used

Thank you very much !

In my honest opinion, the last good Honda CRV was from the 2014 model year when they offered a naturally aspirated (NA) 2.4L I4 mated to a conventional automatic transmission.  After that they went to a CVT-only transmission and eventually only offered a small, overstressed turbo charged engine, both of which may not be ideal if you intend to keep your vehicle for a long time and well past 200,000 miles.

If you like changing timing belts, adjusting valves, and cleaning back of intake valves (from carbon buildup) every so often, then get the Honda.  Otherwise, I’d stick to Toyota which has none of those shortcomings.  And they still offer a NA engine mated to a conventional automatic transmission.

If by newest you mean new, since pretty much nowadays any reasonably new CRV costs the same as new - then neither.

Homda doesn’t really have a great 4 cylinder right now - the CRV is only offered with a troublesome 1.5T mates to a CVT.

And that’s an outgoing model…

So I’d recommend just getting a RAV4, better quality, better engine, better transmission, better… everything.

If you're considering the CR-V then go with a brand new Rav4. They are in the same size category and you won't have to deal with turbocharged engines. The only way you can get a new CR-V without turbocharged engine is if you plan on buying a hybrid version.
