"Dexos" oil

Hi Scotty...Can you elaborate on the history of GM's Dexos oil...I can totally understand the need for a newer standard for GDI turbocharged small engines, however, I have a totally cynical view that this is just a GM moneygrab - from the oil suppliers who have to pay GM royaties for the "Dexos" label and for the extra margin that consumers have to pay for that oil.. Is Dexos that much superior to ILSAC GF 6 oil?  It would be great if you can do a video on this topic!! 🙂

Pls advise

Thank you

I don't buy any engine oil unless -

A.  It meets the vehicle manufacturers specifications

B.  It's on sale

I don't care what "name" they put on it.

Some of the Costco Kirkland brand oil is Dexos compatible and is half the price of name brands like Mobil 1 and perhaps cheaper than other Dexos compatible brands.

IMHO, it is both legit and a money grab. Dexos is an oil specification with a brand name. As long as the oil meets the specs, it should be okay to use. The Dexos name just makes it easier (and possibly more expensive) to buy.

Unless you buy the Costco Kirkland brand! It’s pretty cheap.

how much extra margin?

The price of the oil looks pretty normal to me.
