Bought my first ever Toyota last week, 23 camry se with 20k miles on it. Ive noticed the car has a loud start up, and been noticing at idle sometimes especially when im close to something, a very audible ticking knocking noise. Car will sound fine, then it starts to make the noise for a bit, then goes away back to normal, will do this in drive thru's and after i park the car but not turn it off. If i give it a bit of gas about 5 seconds later the noise goes away back to normal engine sounds. Im guessing this is the Direct/Port system in use. Ive been told online it is normal for this engine but makes me nervous still when I hear it.

No lights on dash, vehicle operates fine, fluids are good. Curious if i should bring it in to the mechanic just to be looked at or im just being paranoid bc im not used to this system.

Well have a mechanic look at it. They should not clack sometimes they clack because the variable valve timing has a little bit of a problem and I'll do that when The engine is called

At the 11:00 mark in the following video the Car Care Nut discusses direct injection and port injection, and at 14:32 he addresses the high pressure fuel pump associated with direct injection and the noise it produces.
