What are your guys thoughts about digital car keys? Is it necessary to have a key from your own phone? Would it create problems in the near future?
I personally don't care for digital car keys or keys that don't start the car by turning the ignition switch on, mechanically. Proximity sensors can reveal your key to nefarious people who are crafty. Cell phones can malfunction or stop working entirely and possibly leave you stranded. I wish they'd go back to a regular old key. Everyone wants to be high tech. In my mind, a key is fail-safe, low tech option that just works. A transponder key is even better. You can make a copy of said key, but the car won't start if there's not an authorized key. The ultimate in fail-safe technology. We've regressed, in my opinion.
Digital car keys are cool, but there is something visceral about sticking in a key, turning it, and starting the car. Heck, even if an electric car had such a thing, I think that would be interesting.
Alas, everything is going touchscreen and everything is going on the phone. So I am in the minority. Hang on to those keys while you can.
What are your guys thoughts about digital car keys?
Car thieves love them.
