I have a 2008 impala with around 170k miles on it. I think my transmission is going out as it will occasionally jerk/slam when first taking off in drive and don't know it will be worth fixing or buying another reliable car during covid. I would definitely rather buy from a private seller but there is not much privately posted for sale within 75 miles.
Today I found a 2008 Toyota Carolla at a ford dealership but they want about 8 thousand for it. I know it'll last me a long time but I know they've jacked up the prices a lot there. With the pandemic affecting used cars, should I try and hold off until my transmission goes out, or try and bite the bullet and tradethe impala in for that Carolla, or just keep an eye out for a better deal. Please, Scotty, I need your wisdom.
-Thank you, Jakob.
A 13-year-old Impala with that kind of mileage is not likely to last much longer. Even though this is not a good time for car shopping you'd be better off getting something else. $8K is too much for a Corolla that age though, I'd keep looking, preferably private sale rather than a stealership.
Add some Lucas transmission additive to the ATF and pray it helps the situation until you find a good car.
