I rallied my 2003 Infiniti QX4 with 200K miles on it a bit to hard last weekend and manage to compress the Old Man Emu heavy duty front spring on the drivers side off of the strut perch. I was able to have Les Schwab use their spring compressor to put it back in place b/c I was hoping to drive the car again this weekend.
Now that the coil is back on the perch I took it for a drive and noticed another problem. When I drive over 20 mph I get the hissy, whining screeching noise as I begin to accelerate. I don’t feel or see any alignment issues. Les Schwab noted on the receipt possible bad bearings.
After watching some of your videos I got under the car to look deeper into damages I may have brought upon my vehicle. When I got under the car, I found damage to the CV boot closest to the tire on the front drivers side. That CV boot has definitely shot grease up on the strut. It’s normally yellow and now is covered in black grease.
Main question is: Do I buy one new CV Axle or two? Since it’s a high mileage vehicle and I want keep it running safely on the road, do I replace the just the drivers side or both?
Since upgrading to Old Man Emu suspension my rig has always had spring bind when turning a street corner slowly (not always, but most times. and sometimes it’ll throw the alignment which I solve by turning the wheels the opposite way to get the springs to “pop” or bind again.
Will replacing both CV axles potentially help with the spring bind?
I really appreciate all your advice. I used to hate working on my own cars and now I view it as a great way to learn and save money. I plan on renting a spot at a DIY garage so that I can use the better tools and have the car lifted for this BIGGER job.
Hope your having a great day!!! Cheers!
You can just buy one but realize is everything's worn the other one may wear out soon but as long as the boot isn't ripped it should be okay for a while
Thanks Scotty!! Appreciate everything you do for the world of DIY mechanics!
