My 2009 corolla burns oil, I add about 1 quart per 1000 miles. I learned this is a design defect , many corollas have this problem.
My questions are:
1. Do I still need to change oil every 5k miles even though I'm adding new oil every 1000 miles? I use good oil filter that is rated for 15k miles.
2. Will my car die MUCH sooner than a normal corolla without burning oil issue? It has 84K miles now.
3. Is there anything I can do to stop the burning oil problem getting worse?
4. What oil shall I use? I now use mobile 1 synthetic high mileage. 5w20. May i can use cheep ones since i put new oil in frequently? or a "heavier" oil like 10w 30?

A: Four or five quarts of dirty oil.
Yes, you still need to change your oil and filter on schedule if you want the engine to last. If the engine doesn't have variable valve timing you can try a heavier oil to see if it will cut consumption. However you can't use heavy weight oil in VVT engines since the valve timing mechanism requires the manufacturer-specified viscosity.
What type, or brand of EO oil are you using? Trying another brand of oil, as some engines actually prefer a certain brand of oil.
Also bad driving habits. Like jumping on and off the throttle, causes this, too.
And of course have you been changing your PCV valve once a year, or sooner?
One thing in all the 50 years of being a wrench bender. If you notice oil seepage, you may be waiting too long, between oil changes.
Big question is did you buy it new, or used? If used the first jockey, may have beat that poor horse too death, and ran the oil low. Because he knew nothing about car care.
