Engine Concern (1999 Civic Hatch DX)

Ok, so I don't know if I should be concerned, but my 1999 Civic Hatchback DX (Auto; 179,000 mi) engine works really hard from 10mph-30mph, then it just smooths itself out, and I dunno if it could be the air intake that was installed into it by its previous owners; I still have the stock intake.

I just recently changed the sparkplugs, but I wasn't sure if I should be concerned about that. There is no engine light either

Also another question: My engine tends to get really hot after I drive it to work, which is about 15 mins away, and I was wondering what that could be

You mean it’s got an after market air intake & filter? If yes, go ahead & refit the stock intake & check if your sluggish acceleration goes away. If it persists, change your fuel filter & pressure test your fuel pump.

Does it overheat or does it just run hot?

You need to remove your serpentine belt and check and make sure all your pulleys, alternator, ac compressor spin freely. If ones binding it will cause low power to struggle, also put extra load on the engine. Check that first.

if thats ok, after you drive to work touch each wheel in center. If its really warm or hot you have a brake or wheel bearing dragging.

um...said engine runs hot on drive to work..no mention of brakes

Right, but lets say rear brake or brakes maybe dragging a little. It would be enough extra load but short enough drive to not be smoking. Unless someone put their hand on the wheel after stopping you would never know. 😁

How hot is hot? What does the temp gauge say?
