F150 Mystery Coolant Loss

Topic starter

2015 F150 3.5L Ecoboost 55,000 miles.

I noticed my coolant level was below “MIN” about 5 months ago.  No discernible leak.  I filled it and then the level slowly went down again with no obvious leak.  I brought it to the dealer who pressure tested the system and did not find a leak.  I have added about a gallon of coolant over the past 5 months.  There is no smoke or smell.  The truck runs fine.  What should I do?  Thanks

Put some dye in your coolant and run it for a day or so. You can than get your UV glasses and look for yourself to see any areas it may be leaking externally.

Lets hope its not burning it. They sell headgasket testing kits on amazon.

I work at a dealer. And trust me half the techs do not know what they are doing. Scarily enough.

Take it to the dealer. There is many Tsb's and recalls on that engine with turbos.. and by the way stop using orange coolant and go with Gold. Another update by Ford. Zerex G05 is a good substitute

Check the oil and see if it is "milky".  I've heard the 3.5l may have a design issue with the water pump... since it is internal to the engine, if it develops a leak it will leak into the engine oil.  If your engine oil looks like chocolate milk, I would say faulty water pump, or a blown head gasket.

If you're losing coolant and are unsure if it is leaking out first check your oil.  Your nose knows if there's an oil leak so remove the oil cap and smell the underside or look for oil that is consistently whitish..  If the coolant leaks into the oil the oil will ride high on the dipstick as well.

Good luck.
