Hey Scotty

I know you told us that Fiat is junk. But I have seen a suzuki swift in India with 320,000 kms (198,000 miles) with a Fiat derived turbo diesel engine, but it had a check engine light from 220000 kms (136,000 miles). What's your opinion on this.

That is because the 1.3L MJD engine is not a Fiat manufactured engine. It’s a collaboration between a few conglomerates -  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_JTD_engine

A true Fiat turbo diesel like the VM Motori diesels are junk & fall apart as they age. http://mygarageairdrie.ca/our-top-5-engines-that-require-absolutely-religious-oil-changes/

With that said, turbo diesels are inherently built stronger than gasoline engines so they generally last much longer. The diesel Swift you mentioned probably has spent a majority of its life on the highway.
