looking at used cars and trucks. you say to have a used car checked out by a "mechanic like me". How is the best way to find an honest, knowledgable mechanic with the equipment to do a thorough SCAN of the car?

Ask around, if you have a military base nearby ask someone who works on base. Military folks keep good info like that for each other.
We have a list of user submitted good mechanics (link given by Day Walker or accessed through the FAQ), check those out maybe we have some for your area. If not, you could ask to see if anyone lives where you are and has a good mechanic recommendation. The said section in the FAQ also discusses how to find a good mechanic. If you are still lost, go somewhere (repair shop NOT a chain mechanic place) and get a basic oil change done, see if you get the oil change done or a list of other unnecessary repairs.
