Im looking into getting a prius plug in hybrid from 2014 with 74k miles. Is the reliability as good as a normal prius for 2014? Or should I avoid these?

I have a Gen 2 with 298K+ miles.  Amazing cars. And the Gen 3 is a refinement of the Gen 2.

That’s probably the best year for the Hen 3 of Prius to get in terms of reliability. I’m not too familiar with the plug in from first hand experience, but from what I hear they are great.

Assuming everything checks out of course.

The only major thing to look out for in earlier years of that generation would be head gasket issues. I don’t think it was much of an issue for later years of that generation like the year you are looking at.

For a hybrid, this is probably the best one out there.

Keep in mind hybird ownership costs get expensive as they age beyond 10-15 years old. Prius hybrids generally don't have much expenses until around 150-250k miles. Keep in mind battery and generator and things like that will cost $$$$ and they aren't good DIY cars. If you are fine with all this, be my guest and buy one. Keep in mind though, a regular 2014 Corolla could get up to 40-50mpg combined with its CVT so the Prius fuel economy isn't that impressive for that specific year.

I would stick to non-hybrid vehicles (especially if looking at used cars).  Look at a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic.  What you think you may save in fuel buying a used hybrid you may potentially offset down the line in repairs - plus for repairs you have to find a mechanic who specializes in hybrids, they are harder to find, and it will be more expensive (and if you go to the dealer even more so).

Its 7 years old, it can be fine but as they get older and stuff starts breaking, they become very expensive. If you won't be driving a lot every year, it can be a good vehicle.
