What can be a good first car used. I'm not looking forward of the newer cars even though I like how the look but i get looks can be deceiving. My options are used Toyota corolla, Camry, Honda accord, civic, Hyundai sonata, scion tc. What years are good and what years to avoid. I know that some of the cars i said that's new have gdi turbo charge which seems bad and hard to work on and expensive. Also with transmissions like 8 speed and 10 speed seems it won't last but not sure about the cvt in the corolla which seems to be reliable since it been out for years.
If you watch Scotty you know the answer already. 🧐
You're on the right track except for Hyundai. They are junk. This topic has been discussed alot. If you put this topic in the search box you will get everything you need to know.
I would get the Camry. I prefer a traditional transmission over a CVT.
Just bought a 2020 Camry TRD myself and absolutely love it.
I wouldn't have a problem recommending one at all. 20k miles on mine and she drives like new.
Of the ones you listed, stick to the Toyota Camry and Corolla, and Honda Accord and Civic. Do a search on this forum for years to avoid. Also, look at our Car Buying Guide under FAQ.
The 1.8 has an excellent track record. I don't think you could go wrong with either model. I am not a fan of either transmission, but if I had to choose one I go with the 8 speed. @dan is an expert with transmissions and could give you more information on the transmissions.
anything but the Hyundai
Camry for sure...stay away from cvt's. Or get a Corolla with the manual transmission...yes, they still offer a manual...We have one with the 2.0
Yeah, overall they're some of the best cars out there.
The new 2018-up Corolla (E210) shares it's platform with the Prius and so far they seem to hold up alright.
Dynamic Force engines with the Launch Gear K120 transmission seem to be a good combination.
I'd avoid the K313 transmission as that one seems to already cause some issues to owners...
I own a 2021 Camry SE. It's been the best vehicle purchase I've ever made. I owned American and German vehicles before and they were meh.
I have a 2019 Camry SE and it’s the best car I’ve ever had. I’ve seen many people who drive for Uber/Lyft with 2018+ Camrys with 150k+ miles with no issues. Not a fan of Corollas and Civics due to the fact that they’re too small, uncomfortable and too slow. As for the Hyundai Sonata…. Very nice and comfortable but I had one and it caught on fire a month after I got it so run away from Hyundai lol
I have a 2020 Corolla LE (1.8L CVT K313) and a 2020 Camry LE (8AT).
Both are very good and reliable cars, it depends on what you want.
Transmission:
This K313 CVT is reliable and has been in Corolla since 2014 if not then earlier.
This 8AT is basically on every other 8AT model from different manufactures. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWF8F35
If the 8AT is trash, then other manufactures won't use it.
Engine:
The Corolla has a good ole 1.8L engine which has been in the market for years, it's been proven very reliable.
The Camry engine, which is a Dynamic Force engine, can be found on basically every new Toyota model: Camry, RAV4, Highlander Hybrid, Sienna, Corolla 2.0L, Corolla Cross, the new Tundra, etc. I have seen some people driving a 2019 Camry with well over 280k miles on the original engine.
Overall:
Both are good cars, I personally like the Camry more since it's more hp and handles better. If you want a 6MT, go with the Corolla SE.
yes and yes.
Every car you mentioned except for the Hyundai is excellent. Picking between them will come down to your personal preference.
What do you mean by worth it? They are good vehicles.
They're great cars for sure. And if looking at 2018 or newer then definitely look into purchasing brand new as a possibility too given how expensive used cars have become so sometimes new is more worth it.
Corolla and Civic years to avoid according to Scotty:

Also this can be helpful with the Accord vs. Camry:

is it better to the new corolla with the 1.8 engine/Cvt instead of the new Camry with the 2.5 engine that seems complexed and with the 8 speed transmission when it comes to long life and reliability. I see the the 1.8 has been out for many years and proved to be reliable. and less complexed.
Nope, the CVT with the 1.8L is a K313 without a launch gear -those are troublesome.
The 8 speed has been around for many years, even on very premium cars and so far, with the right maintenance it seems to be a reasonably well built transmission.
I have had good luck with Chevy malibu's and Impala's from the 90's mainly 97 and I frequently see them for sell but you always want to get them checked before purchase.
Is a 2018 and up Camry or corolla a good first car to buy ?
Yep, all of those are great.
I'd avoid the newer Corollas due to their CVTs, especially ones without the launch gear.
Toyota camry or Honda Civic. Stay away away from cvt transmission. We had a Scion we loved. Make sure it's not the dreaded camry engine that burns oil. There was a model that had undersized piston rings.
Is it worth it to get the new Camry 2018 and up ?
Yes those are very solid cars. I personally don't like a lot of things about their engineering about overall they're great daily drivers.
Is it better to buy a 2009-2012 Honda Accord that's in good shape than to buy a 2018 and up Honda Accord ?
IMO, definitely. They had better conventional automatics and nice large engines.
Just don't overpay for it, used car prices currently are insane - and I wouldn't spend new car money on a non-current gen car with some milage on it.
is it better to buy a used accord 2009-2017 in good condition than buy a new accord 2018 and up ?
please don't repeat your questions. Thanks.
