First oil change on new car

Hey Scotty, my wife bought a 2020 Ford Fusion SE.  She's got 2000 miles on it now with original oil.  Should we change oil now or wait until 5,000?

As a ford master tech,I would change the oil now, make sure you use the factory recommended oil and filter, which should be be motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend,or motorcraft 0w20 synthetic blend.
It will say on the oil fill cap what oil viscosity to use.

You can never change oil too often. (Says the engine.)

First oil change is always sooner than any recommended interval.

Consult owners manual and change more frequent than recommended...remember, vehicle manufacturers are in the business of selling new vehicles...not promoting long term ownership.

Following oil change intervals need to be based on vehicle use (driving conditions).

Constant long drives can go with a longer interval...engine gets to operating temperature and burns off water condensation, piston rings seat well and lessen contamination from unburnt gas vapors, etc.

Short drives are considered severe use, also towing, extreme temperatures, and excessive idling. That use requires short intervals.

Of course all that can be ignored...in the long term not keeping oil level full and oil/filter changed shortens engine life.
