Okay, I’m having a kid. Hurray the species continues. And the missus has declared we need an SUV. I planned on driving my 2006 Ford Fusion with its 224,000 miles right up until the universe stopped expanding and everything on earth ceased to exist. She has other plans and at the end of the day, why argue with the wife. Especially since she’s buying the SUV. So, the fusion and I will be forever.

Now I’m going to delve into stereotypes here so don’t get offended it just is what it is. If you see a person with a pick up truck jacked 10 feet in the air you make fun of him for being a man boy who doesn’t know how to twist a Phillips head. If you see a Mazda Miata you think, that’s a flamboyant car. Good chance a flamboyant driver. Good for that person. And if you see a Subaru Forester, odds are it’s a strong knockdown drag out softball playing gal. Especially if it’s Forrest green.

So we are currently looking in the 50k and under market for an SUV. My dad who’s a mechanic swears by the forester. Highest crash test. Safest. Roll or three times and the windshield might be cracked. I however thing they look like a car a child designed from play dough and ran out of ideas and left it as is.
So what do others recommend my wife drives, easy to get a kid, puppy and god knows what else we need to get this year in and out. Looks good. Zero issues. And if someone runs a light and hits us we’re going to be fine and dandy.

Now me, I have my Fusion and my Segway Es3 scooter, that I named scoot. Because I like to look like a tourist ambling through life when I make quick 3 mile trips places.

That’s neither here nor there. So any recommendations, wonderful.

thank you for this post {blackemo}:laughtertotears:

Er--- New? Used?

he didn't specify. It just needs to be within $50k

@mountainmanjoe
Could that not be 50k miles? A man who drives a first generation Fusion into the ground doesn't seem the guy to buy "whatever the missus like" for 50 grand.

Usually people look for cars with a certain budget in mind. Mileage is secondary.
He didn't want a SUV to begin with. I have a feeling that the final decision rests with child bearer.

I would say a minivan is a great choice man. I think a Toyota sienna would really be great and honestly I will get one when my car takes a crap. But congrats on the kid! But if your thinking on being a very active family and or planning to have more than 1 kid I would look at a minivan for sure. Think of the easy camping and very very easy road trips with a van being able to change the baby inside a van instead of a tight seat or a bathroom, just saying a minivan is VERY practical.

Personally I would also be considering a minivan, they are more practical and because they are considered to be "un cool" you can get a much better price on one. As for SUVs I would look at the Forester, RAV4, Highlander, CR-V, Pilot, CX-5, CX-7, CX-9, and the Grand Vitara.

Also Tribute, an Escape, an Explorer, and an Expadition can all be okay if you can get them cheap enough.

So, isn't the correct answer "whatever the missus likes"? Some hints might be helpful.

Whatever you end up getting, be sure to check out our buying guide first (in the FAQ) and make sure it's not a dud.

If you are talking 50,000 dollars then hey a Lexus RX should be in your mind but if you mean used with under 50k miles then a 2017 2018 or so RAV4 or CR-V LX should do the trick. CX-5 is also a recommendation.

Subaru's aren't half bad.  They are basic design, but they will get you from point A to point B reliably.

I'm in consensus with Kerem: CR-V, RAV4, CX-5 are good options.  RAV4 if you like sporty, CR-V if you like a utility, and the CX-5 if you don't mind the entertainment interface.
