I have a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 with 104,000 miles. Ever since I bought the truck I have had it sprayed with fluid film every 6 months. But now I’m questioning if I should stick with that or should I have the frame descaled and painted. The frame does have a very small bit of surface rust but but that’s all. What do you guys recommend? The fluid film has been serving me well so far but I was wondering if I should use something else instead.
Sounds like it's working fine. You can't stop rust.
the amount of labour to strip and degrease the frame now to make the paint stick would probably not be worth it.
The nice thing about Fluid Film and similar products is that it does not require much in the way of surface prep, just brushing off any loose scale and rust. It's also ideal to spray inside the frame rails through drainage holes. The downside of course is it needs to be reapplied periodically. (I do it once a year in the fall.)
If you're going to paint the frame it's potentially longer lasting but the frame must be cleaned and prepped properly down to the last nook and cranny or the paint is going to peel away.
