I was thinking of getting a new ford ranger as my next car, what do you guys think?

Clarification: How many years and miles do you need the truck to last you?

I would pass.  Ford quality has gone down the El Bano for quite some time now.  If you want a small truck, get a Tacoma.

I wouldn't buy a brand new Ford anything. Period.

Old or new? Older ones are decent trucks, watch the frame, especially the rear half for rust if you live in the snow and slush belt. Also check the automatic transmission out. I'm personally not a fan of the new ones. Turbocharging along with GDI in a small 4-cylinder and putting it in a pickup truck isn't my idea of a good, long term design, unless you want a show truck and don't plan to use if as a truck very often.

Don't.

Look, turbo charged w/ GDI is the way these companies are leaning now. For all the Toyota people, new Tundra doesn’t have the V8 anymore. It’s a turbo charged V6, you still going to keep pushing Toyota? That’s the reality, I don’t like it either but thats how it is.  The 2020/21 ranger is actually a decent truck. Maintenance intervals are going to be shorter. Honestly I’d worry more about the 10 speed transmission than the motor. And it’s a fraction of the cost of a Tacoma.

I will say my personal issue with the GDI turbo truck stuff, especially from domestic manufacturers is they love to reuse engines in totally different platforms to save money, and make absolute minimal modifications, even when the two vehicles have totally different uses. The 2.7L base V6 in the F-150 was in that short-lived Fusion Sport, and the 2.2L EcoBoost was built specifically for the Mustang, neither original duty was pulling heavy stuff in a truck. Very different operating conditions. Design a turbo/ GDI engine specifically for those conditions and I'd be more likely to trust it. They did that minimal design change stuff with the Explorer most infamously. The old Rangers also reused a V6 from a sedan and people complained of lack of power. It'll be lack of durability soon.

While a Ford is likely the only American car I would consider buying these days, I would go with a Tacoma in this case.

Turbocharged or not, Ford quality is not there, so if you plan to keep for the long haul I’d reconsider.

No, you won't like the brakes.
