The idea has been kicking around for a while. Whether good, bad, or indifferent it's not likely to go anywhere because governments are forcing manufacturers to put their efforts into electric cars rather than further development of gasoline engines.

Swedish hypercar manufacturer Koenigsegg is one of the companies that has been working on the idea and built prototypes.

Oh yeah they try this stuff in race cars but man it's expensive and there's no way electronics will last as long as mechanical in a harsh environment like an engine I would certainly not buy one until it has been out for years in Toyota made them
