Hey scotty name is Carl and I need your help really bad right now. I have a 1998 toyota camry v6 with 150K miles on it. My car is making cracking noise from front wheel. I went to kwik car they said they are gonna charge me 1500 dollars for wheel alignment and new suspension.

I don't have enough money to buy a new car or used so do you think I should go with it ?

Can you post a video of the noise please? And when does it make the noise? At high speed? Low speed? Going straight? Turning? When you accelerate? When you accelerate & turn from a stop/low speed? When going over bumps? Are both front wheels making the noise?

So the car is making noises especially from front right side
When turning
Going on low speeds
Some times straight
Accelerating and turning on low speeds

Idk how to post the video or picture but I went to kwik kar and this is the bill they told me after inspection

I live  in frisco texas small city if anyone knows good reliable mechanics please let me know .....I would appreciate it
I am trying my best here to find good honest mechanics but its hard to find  and most of them are trying to bend me over

From your description, I’d say you need new CV axle(s). Have a watch of Scotty’s videos which I have attached in the answers (below), to check if you have similar symptoms. Fingers crossed the links from @mountainmanjoe (above) will be of great use to you.

I checked my cv joint and inspected them three times they are in good shape any other suggestions please....
Plus I wanna thank all of you for helping me out in this trying times.... I got laid of due to covid and on a tight budget right on. I was saving money for new car but covid ruined everything

And also it would be helpful if you guy can tell me how to post video so it easier to explain and on Monday I will go to one of these mechanics to get my car checked

It could be a few things really. But the most accurate way of knowing will be hands on. We can only try/to point you in the right direction.
Attaching a video here is really easy. Upload your photo or video to imgur/google drive/YouTube/iCloud, then post the link to it here.
2020 has been tough on all of us, so hang in there!

Okay I noticed they want to change both your front struts. Are they both wet? Does your car bounce badly over bumps? Are your front tyres wearing evenly? Does your steering wheel shake at all? Are the rubber bushings on top of the struts cracked?

@inthrustwetrust
@mountainmanjoe
They literally seperately add "other total" "totol labor" and "labor front struts". What kind of quote is this? What a rip off.

Yeah which is why Joe & the others recommended he visit another shop.

@inthrustwetrust
yeah I said they are ripping him off as well they are pretty undercover and I would not like that as a consumer so I would look for a mechanic who knows what he is doing rather than a chain store.

The best way to post photos here is to upload them to a service like imgur.com
For videos, upload to Youtube.com
Then copy+paste the image/video URL here

ok they want to sell you new tires as well. It still doesn't add up

Struts: 262.48
Tires 109.86
Parts total: 372.34

alignment 90
struts install 115
total labour 205

Grand total: $577.34

What is the other $1,000 for?

I would just tell them that you don't have much money, and you only want to fix the noise and nothing else. See what they say. If they're still trying to sell you the farm, then thank them and get a second opinion somewhere else.

the parts total is not $372 it is $744 (that is what they quoted him). I also see that they did a 230 dolar total labor cost but also a front strut labor cost that were added seperately.

And wt heck is "other total" I feel like they are ripping him off

"they said they are gonna charge me 1500 dollars for wheel alignment and new suspension."

OK, did they give you a detailed quote with what is it that they will fix/replace - with an explanation why - and than follow that up with an alignment? After all, it is 1998 car, … is it, therefore, a possibility that your car may just be needing that much work?

F.S.

They are beating a dead horse find an honest mechanic who knows what he is doing and won't rip you off. That is easily the value of the car.
