FYI: Dealer Upsells

My friend took her RAV4 hybrid in to the dealer for the 15K complimentary service. She had the oil change at 10K less than 6 months ago.  And Toyota the company recommends every 10K for an oil change.

Yet when she took it in, the dealer said, it’s almost a year old, so it needs an oil change. And it would be additional charge.

The logic wasn’t based on mileage (which I would have respected, because this is what Scotty and the forum recommends.)

The logic wasn’t even based on the time from the last oil change (which is less than 6 months ago.)

The logic was based solely that the car was almost a year old.

Now, it has 15k miles, so it is time to change the oil.

She does not need to go to the dealer to change the oil.

I concur. My point is that the dealer logic in changing the oil, which isn’t based on mileage.

When it comes to logic, I don't expect anything from a dealer.

Hahahah. LIkewise.

Oil change is based on pure mileage or you have to change it once a year..

In my case annually since I drive less then the minimal 5K per year.

When it comes to selling things, they can be very inovative.

Good example of why I am not a fan of maintenance deals on new cars.  They don’t do them out of the goodness of their heart, they do it because every customer visit is a potential sale.

I can understand that some people like to do regular maintenance at the dealer... it maintains warranty, they are sure to use OEM parts, they can do recall work, stuff like that.  And the techs at dealers tend to be above average (maybe not as good as a great independent shop, but better than, say, Walmart or the quick oil change places), and at the least will be familiar with the brand’s “quirks and features”.  But at dealer shop rates, you can waste a lot of money fast if you aren’t careful.

I use a shop that specializes in Toyota and Honda cars.
