Hey Scotty.
Everyday gas is getting more expensive. Do you have any tips on saving money on gas?
Thanks.

But seriously, carpool. And change your driving style to drive with fuel economy as your primary goal.

Basically, pretend you're about to run out of gas & you're still 30 miles from the nearest pump, stuck in heavy traffic.

The obvious one is are don't drive like around like a scalded ape. Scotty made me belly laugh with that one. Haha. Don't drive with harsh acceleration or abrupt stopping. Trying to anticipate light changes and keeping your car coasting as much as possible saves a lot of fuel. Your car burns the most gas when you're accelerating. You also waste a decent amount just by idling. Avoid that whenever possible.

An often overlooked one is to watch your top speed on the highway. Your car's top gear is where your engine vs the wheel RPMs are lowest, and you will ideally get the best gas mileage at the speed where your car just shifts into that gear. That's around 45 mph in most cars. Of course you can't go 45 on the highway, so keep your speed around 65 and you'll save a lot of gas.

not to mention, the faster you go on the highway, the more fuel you burn to overcome aerodynamic drag. Drag force increases with the SQUARE of your speed. So if you go 50% faster, drag increases by 125%

There's also the inconvenience of kinetic energy, doubling the speed of the car requires 4x the amount of energy, regardless of drag, etc. We cheat that a bit by changing gears to take advantage of torque, but going 90 in overdrive needs 4x the energy as 45, which empties the gas tank in a hurry, haha.

golly we're smart 😆

Easy on throttle and brake. Check the tire air pressure and make sure they are up to par. Change the engine air filter.

Use your navigation to avoid traffic congestion. Try to time your approach to a red light so that you avoid coming to a complete stop and are still rolling a little when the light changes. Not always possible, and do be sure to watch out for cars trying to beat the light and running the red from the cross street.

Scotty has made multiple videos on the subject. One needs only to search his YT channel.

Drive more like a grandma/grandpa in their old yet reliable prized land yacht and less like a spoiled dumb teenager who was given a sports car for their birthday.

First thing to do is own a fuel friendly vehicle. Drive at the speed limit or below so you won't have to brake and accelerate too often. Don't drive like a maniac. If your car doesn't need premium gas, don't put premium gas in it. Most vehicles are designed to run on 87 nowadays, except for performance and some luxury models. Fill your tank in the morning. Fuel expends in hotter temperature.

the fuel expansion thing is baloney. Scotty explained it a few times in his videos

Was about to say, he just made a video about it - watch from 07:13

Less right foot, not so much left foot. Learn how to coast.

Basically, don't drive like 99.99% of the population. Most are all gas or all brake, no in between.
