Gasoline smell after morning start up

Hello all.

I have a 98 Toyota 4Runner Ltd, 179,000 miles, automatic transmission, 4WD. Every morning when I start it up there’s a gasoline smell that comes from the exhaust. It goes away after a few minutes of driving. It’s been this way for a few years. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks

@satter
first check for blown fuses
i reccomend you check your dip stick, if you have correct fluid amount and your oil smells like gas, you have a problem. if gas is pouring to the exhaust clean all sensors : MAP SENSOR AIR FLOW SENSOR, OXYGEN SENSORS. check if your fuel injectors works, also check for the tips on the spark plug from very close you can see it the tip is bent or broken replace accordingly. let your computer accept new configurations and if you still have the issue, do a compression test. if its good there, check your fuel pump relay and or fuse.

It's common for the EVAP system to do this if it has a leak. Check for fault codes, and even if there isn't one, find your evap cannister and check that all connections are tight.  It may also be that the car is old enough that the EVAP cannister needs replacement.

I could be a faulty fuel injector. After turning the motor off, a faulty injector drips gas into the cylinder until the  fuel pressure has dissipated. Then, when you start it up, that excess fuel goes out the exhaust.

Yes this is true. But also realize that it is normal to smell some gas on a cold start. The catalysts are not up to operating temperature yet so you're gonna smell some unburned gas out the tail pipe.

If this has been like that for years and not getting worse and not throwing codes, you should not be too much concerned. It is an old vehicle and as explained in the previous comment, it might be expected on a certain extent.
