Need help choosing a car (convertible)

Good evening everyone,

Firstly, I'd like to congratulate Scotty on his transition to Tennessee and a website of his own. Over the years I have learned a lot from your YouTube videos and really appreciate the advice. I've been my own mechanic for almost 10 years, only hiring a professional whenever I need to do an engine swap or something major.

I really like how German cars like Audi and BMW drive, however I also know that they can have a lot of issues with the plastic engines.

I really want to buy a used convertible, preferably a 2015+ but I don't need one. I need a car just to commute back and forth to work so really a Toyota Avalon or Highlander would serve me well. I just don't want to look back a few years from now and regret not buying a fun convertible.

Thanks for everything.

Since u mention bmw and audi.

I will say two cars I have enjoyed

Bmw 428

Audi tt

Both are money pits lol. But I am a sucker.

Bmw interior felt cramp and did not give me driving a dream car feel.

Audi was really fun to drive and interior is great but it has what we can the hair dresses look.

Next step up super car league

Bmw m6  audi r8

Bmw s or n 63 engine in this car is a hand grenade and run very hot. But it quick hand ok.

Audi r8

Ac and magnetic damper keep on failing on these. Blind spot and feels like u are in cockpit with tunnel vision.

But these cars are money pits and people saying the mx5(maita) have the correct advice I feel.  But I love to live life a little and must enjoy burning a hole in my pocket lol.

Good luck and enjoy

@klob

Great suggestions and I agree on those cars being money pits. I am also a sucker for BMW but that cramped interior and plastic engine are deal breakers for me.

I was looking at Porsche Boxsters but I remember Scotty saying they're endless money pits.

Probably just go with a stick shift Mustang GT.

Porsche boxster are nice ,
main problem with this car was ims bearing.. it a hand grenade not will it break but when .. if you get one I would replace this asap or get one that the owner has had done with receipts.

Mustang are great but I just like European money pit cars ...lol

@klob
The devil on my shoulder keeps whispering in my ear that if I get a Boxster and install an aftermarket IMS bearing with the oil adapter, I'll be golden. That's a pretty big IF for a 10 or so year old car.

What are your thoughts?

Lol I am that donkey scotty puts up that saw endless money pit guy.
I have never owned a boxster but I can say owning other Porsche they are the best all round car I have drive that you feel like a driver... sure bmw was quicker and my audi felt like I was some rockstar. But in the mountain the sweeping corner the car just felt great. (I had psm) .. just maybe save up and get 911 🙂 or honda s2000 is other option I heard was good

Next car I am saving up for is a lotus evora .

Anyone with a spare couch as the wife will kicked me out lol

Edit

I prefer the older car . I can tell you more horror story with the modern one and electronic

The best convertible car that will last a long time is the Mazda Miata/MX-5. You could also get a Ford Mustang with the 5.0L V8 or GT trims. It is up to you but the Mazda Miata/MX-5 will be more reliable. Just make sure to avoid getting the automatics in the Ford Mustang, the manual is way more reliable.

Ever consider at Lexus SC430? They can be found for a good price with low miles. Or if you are a big spender the new Lexus LC500 would be a great choice too!

Those little Miata cars are sure fun to drive. A mustang V8 is a classic car to own. I never heard anyone buying one or the other and being disappointed.

They did make Toyota Avalon/Solara convertibles, so I'd go that route if you want something reliable as heck that you can put the top down and don't care about going fast.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I really appreciate it.

Wish I had the scratch for an LC500, that's a sweet ride.

I have a VW EOS and they are fun cars without being a money pit.  There were timing chain issues with the 2.0 engine for 2012 and earlier.  I would take a look at the 2015s last year of production.

I own a 2012 Audi A5 convertible low miles and love IT! I bought it used a few years ago. Few issues. Found a good independant mechanic to do water pump and new rotors. I have a very painful back condition. The A5 is a good size and comfortable. Has space in trunk with the top up or down. Has small back seat for extra passengers on short trips. Back seats also fold down for hauling things. Highly recommend it!

My partner has a 2001 Miata. It's fun to drive stick shift but is a rough ride. It kills my back. Very small trunk, less practical.

I'm waiting for an electric convertible... I will probably die before that ever happens. LOL. Good luck. Let us know what you decide.
