I have a 2012 Subaru forester with a 4 speed automatic transmission with 82,000 miles. The gear selector feels stiff when going through all the gears but the transmission shifts fine. I'm thinking it might be low on transmission fluid or do you think it might be something more serious?

Was the car sitting for a while?
yes it sat for around 6 months ish.
If that’s the case, it is normal. If you start driving it, it will get back to normal.
