All auto manufacturers build an assortment of cars with varying prices. As an example Mercedes builds the A Class for $33k base price to the S Class with a $176k base price. My question is are the components of the high priced model BETTER components than the low priced units?
I suspect that, as with home construction, the components are identical on the cheapest model as on the most expensive model. Meaning the spark plugs, alternator, water pump, brake discs etc etc etc. I imagine the increased price is due to the accessories and interior fittings as opposed to the mechanical components.
No, not at all. There are plenty of expensive luxury cars that are cheaply assembled out of cheap components and end up being endless moneypits.
Generally speaking yes; the more expensive ones will (usually) use higher quality components but also you are paying for more technology, luxury, and performance, to name a few. With increased performance, the parts will usually be better to handle the higher stress.

I think the best value will be in the middle segment. Not in the cheapest econobox cars. Not the $100k + luxury and supercars. But middle of the road cars in the $40k - $70k MSRP range. (not brand new of course)
In general, the pricier options tend to be a little bigger, more powerful, more luxurious and have more tech and features. Car models from the same brand will usually share parts between eachother.
For some brands let's say nissan, their sport car 370Z will usually be built better and have stronger components (correct me if I'm wrong). The nissan sentra use the exact same Continuously Variable Transmission than the altima (bigger and more expensive) and tend to brake down faster than the altima (however other factors could impact this specific statistic).
For Mercedes, A class vs S class mostly comes down to tech, power and luxury. You can get a massage listening to a super expensive Burmester sound system with 20ish speakers while being completely oblivious to the road noises due to it's high isolation and it's electrohydraulic suspension that will make you feel like you're rolling over cotton candy.
Is it worth it? That depends on the brand and how much you value comfort, speed, luxury, but most importantly how much money you really want to spend.
I Love Scotty; BUT he hates BMW's! I understand his Why's and opinion; BUT I love my Bimmer! It is difficult to work on; it does have TOO much plastic crap all over. But it will serve me very well if I maintain it and regularly change all of the things that need to be replaced at regular intervals.
Of course! They are fun to drive. Most cars maintained properly will outlast the ones that are not taken care of and driven badly, even maybe some toyotas and hondas. Proper maintenance goes a long way. Scotty also doesn't like spending money on cars so that explains it too. And he's a mechanic so of course he's not gonna like working on cars that are hard to work on/dangerous.
