Good idea to buy 1986 Toyota Supra as first project car?

Hey, I’m 19 and was looking for a nice first project manual car for something around 5k. I was looking and found a 1986 Toyota Supra with about 103k miles on the body and 55k miles on a 2JZ GE that is mounted but not connected. The owner is selling it because they need to buy a bigger car for the family and they have everything needed for an engine swap such as clutch, bell housing and w58 transmission. All that for $5600. Do you think it would be a good idea? I’d love to own something so clean, plus it’s a Toyota!

I think @Mod_Man is a good helper here.

If that is the engine that originally came with it, and something tells me that it is, then since it is a project car, yes buy it. The 1986 Supra was one solid car.

Take my claim with a grain of salt. I don't think it's a good idea to buy this car because engine swap and transmission are a pain in the butt to do. Plus no one barely works on engine swaps if you needed help. You do have to change the electronics too.

In my opinion, that's Overpriced. For your first project car I would certainly get something much cheaper and stick some money into it. Those are fine cars but the market for them is hot right now. I would avoid the bubble.

But if you have to have a Supra, go for it.

That's too much for a Supra with the engine out of it.

If you want a project car, start with something easier to work on with cheaper parts. Civics, Mustangs, Camaros, etc. Supra's are a pain in the butt and get expensive once you start trying to build one right.
