Hi Scotty, On my 95 grand cherokee 4.0. For some reason my fuel pump relay would not energize when I turned the key to the on position, I’ve been told it’s supposed to energize in that position. I permanently grounded it so it does energize now when the key is in the on position. Can this be dangerous? Can it cause a problem?
Thanks
Joe F.
I would get the issue fixed.
- it might wear out the relay quicker
- you will have a little bit more drain on the battery when the vehicle is off
- if there is a mishap and the vehicle is on fire, the pump may keep feeding fuel
Either get a new relay or, if you're cheap like me, clean the corrosion off the male pins of the relay and the female slots of the sockets and run it. What you did shouldn't hurt anything because electricity doesn't care where it gets its ground from to complete the circuit. I would check for continuity between the ground slot in the relay receiver to the vehicle body to make sure there is ground and go from there.
the PCM is not sending the ground until after it starts.
