4WD selector stopped working

Hey ok so I drove to a friends house and the car kept making noises in the ashtray + it sounded like engine problem or like driving over rails. When I got home I see that the tire has a large gap and I was basically driving on the rim with rubbber on and around. Now my friend said this could be hard on the 4WD and he was right I used 4WD to get out of the snow but when I was to re-rngage 2wd the lamp stopped working and now I have a check 4wd light on in the dashbord. Any idea how bad this is for my car? Nevermind the tires

Bad. You will need a diagnostic scan and mechanical inspection.

I got some heavy duty insurance so worst case I really think it covers it.

Does it bounce up and down when you're turning? 

 

You would want to make sure insurance covers that, typically they only cover accidents. Comprehensive coverage may not cover knowingly driving in 4-wheel-drive while driving on pavement. Comprehensive typically involves windshields and things like that. 

 

Spare tires don't do anything for the drivetrain. It's just there.

 You shouldn't have brought it home. Depending on what particular make model of your vehicle (you didn't specify at all, so I'm assuming it's a truck). It's best if you don't drive the vehicle and have it put on a flatbed. Truck tires don't slip on asphalt. There's a transfer case, not a transfer case and center differential. This means both of your axles are always moving together. As a result, you can't drive around corners on asphalt without putting strain on your drivetrain. You could easily break very expensive components. Trucks are designed for off-roading, dirt and mud slips, asphalt doesn't.

 

I put manual hubs on my 1999 Ranger three years ago. The original system used engine vacuum to lock and unlock the hubs, which was unreliable. They might make them for your vehicle as well. Then you don't have to mess around with a computer. 


I got some heavy duty insurance so worst case I really think it covers it. anyways since the car just goes slower slower and slower the more I drive it even with the spare tire attached you are saying the gearbox is broken or drivetrain is worn
