I’m iron Mike Pls my question gotta do with the VW mk4 (golf4) 2001 model, auto transmission. Of recent I discovered each time I drive up to 100km and the engine gets hot the gear shift becomes rough like a car hitting from behind, tho it doesn’t do this all the time, this usually happens like once or twice on every trip… the worse is while on motion at sometimes it acts like it’s fighting it makes this dragging move that scares a passenger lol. Been diagnosed and it complained of the abs pump can’t remember the code but I know it was the abs pump, got it replaced but it won’t stop neither does the Abs light on the dashboard disappears. It didn’t complain gear while diagnosed pls what can I do to stop these actions? Do I replace the gear box??

When is the last time the transmission was serviced?

Sometimes last month I serviced the gear with it’s recommended transmission oil also replaced the filter

Do you think I should replace the gear box?? 🤔…….. does this action actually got somin do with the speed sensors or Brainbox? Cause before diagnosing, it didn’t give any gear error code but rather Abs solenoid

That's all well and good but more important is whether the transmission has been serviced at regular intervals over the last 22 years.

A 22-year-old Golf is not worth the expense of replacing the transmission unless maybe you're going to take a chance on a low-miles junkyard transmission and install it yourself. Then you have to worry that all the associated electronics are working.

Absolutely correct, but I don’t have to worry about the cost of getting a replacement or fixing cause there are always where to find a butchered mk4 around my area here in Nigeria where I’m writing from, there are some vendors who just ship in these cars from the United States down to Nigeria just for butchering and selling parts in piece. Just needed to know if replacements of the gear box was a better option. We don’t rate cars by age but by their efficiencies and methods of economy lol.

Problem is that if it's the electronics (transmission controller) causing the problem, replacing the transmission won't fix the problem. To determine that would require a high-end bidirectional scan tool which you probably don't have access to.

Wow…. This is deep, well I got lotta VW professionals whom are electricians specifically on The VW cars perhaps I’d try him just that he could be sometimes expensive you know what that means….gonna cost sim bucs. Meanwhile what’s your conclusion mr Chucks??

Can't really say from here but given the age of the car it's likely the transmission.

Ok, thank you…. I’d definitely see to it. I thought so too but had doubts.
Was only confused cause while it was diagnosed it didn’t read anything like gear nor valve body components but I’ll save up some more and get it replaced thanks

Also talking about high-end bidirectional scan tool, can you be kind enough to make a recommendation perhaps I could find one here.

If you check the FAQ as well as the "Tools" link at the top of the page you'll find some recommendations. A consideration also is what scan tools will work on cars that were made for your part of the world versus U.S. specification. (Unless of course you're working on a car that was brought over from here.)

Ok thank you God bless, I’d revert for further assistance but meanwhile let me get the gearbox fixed thanks
