I would take it to a mechanic and see if everything looks good to the mechanic than I would say buy it except make sure that the black plastic on the bottom half of the vehicle is taken well care of. Don't leave the vehicle in the sun for too long if it looks fine.

sounds like too much moolah. $3,000 is more like it.

Couple major things to consider:

-Is it an AWD or 4x4 or RWD

-Number of owners (lower the better)

-Location of ownership (dry non-humid climates)

-Maintenance History w/proof (receipts/carfax)

-Mostly HWY miles or not (trust seller?)

-How many miles a year you plan to drive (Less than 5k a year isn't much)

-How functional is the Avalanche for you as a truck (pretty small cargo space)

- Current condition of the tires (not cheap to replace)

If all of these check out on the good side it could be worth 5k.
