Hey Scotty, would you trust Castrol Edge Extended Performance 5W-30 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil for 20,000 miles?

I wouldn't use any oil for 20k miles, no matter the claims.

It's not that I don't trust the oil. I don't trust the engines.

Right. Slow leaks, oil burning, dilution, etc. 5000 mile intervals gives you 4x the chances to catch a problem before it does serious damage.

The oil itself is probably not going to deteriorate. Back in the 1980s I worked in the R&D department of a major oil company and in lab tests synthetic oil didn't break down in 50,000 miles and more, This was under severe conditions where the exhaust manifolds would glow red hot. That was decades ago and synthetic oils have no doubt improved even over that.

However the oil itself is not the issue. The additive package wears out and the oil is contaminated and diluted with combustion byproducts even though the oil itself has not broken down and is technically still "good". So you still want to change oil at 5K-6K mile intervals for best engine life.

As Scotty always says, oil is cheap and engines are expensive.

interesting. Thanks.

Although I'm sure synthetic oils have improved in the last 30-40 years no way would I keep any oil in an engine for 20K miles. (Also just to make sure I'm not giving the wrong impression my work back then was developing laboratory automation software, I was never a lubrication engineer. However I learned a lot working in that environment.)

I didn't figure you for a software engineer

I was heavily involved in software development during the 1980s and 1990s and worked on projects for big corporations back then. These days I'm "semi-retired", doing part-time sysadmin type work for small businesses . It's a dirty job but someone has to do it. 🙂

1 year/5k max is as far as I'll ever go and as far as I recommend.

The marketing department won't be buying you a motor if it goes bang.

you can use it for 20 K miles, as long as you change it every 5K 😊

I will never go over 5k mi for a OCI doesn’t matter what oil I use. Although I will say I do prefer Castrol and that extended performance is very good it’s to expensive for me to buy.

For normal people normal driving 6k to 8k oil change is fine. 5k Is when you want to extend your engine life. There are people that change the oil every 3k. I personally change around 3k but because I buy the cheepest oil I can and I have old car, and I have a jeep so changing the oil is 5min lots of space, no problem.

So ..... You want to have the car for 20 years or more .... 4-5k is ok, You want it for few years then change 7-8k is ok.

Can you drive 20000 miles with oil ..... yes. Who uses such oil ?? mostly large fleets, long distance truck drivers. They have long steady speed and steady oil flow. For day to day city driving you can use that oil but change it more often.

My friend has a delivery van ... new ... recommended oil changing was every 40000 miles . He changes it every 15000 ;D

Change it out at 5000 miles and use the used oil for your chain saw bar lubrication.

Excellent, Joe!

Stick to every 5,000 mile or 1 year, whichever comes first.  If you’ve watched Scotty enough, you know he would not recommend going every 20,000 miles between engine oil changes.  He’d say what we are all saying above.
