High fuel consumption especially at idle

Hello Scotty sir,

I ned some help with my 2010 Honda CRV with the R20A engine. I've been monitoring my fuel consumption and it appears that i get good gas mileage when cruising but at idle the consumption is very very bad. I took a simple OBD2 machine and it seems that at idle the short term fuel trim is negative 5% while at 2000rpm it becomes 0. Also the tail pipe has some soot coating and when starting up the car there is a gassy smell. . I recently had the valve seals replaced but did not readjust the valve adjustments. Oh and the lambda sensor reading from the pre cat one fluctuate from 0.97 to 1 I was thinking of getting a new one as maybe its dying spark plugs were replaced 4 months ago and i also replaced the MAF sensor with a new one and at idle is show about 2.6g.s of air flow. Please help me understand and fix this.

Well first things first adjust the valves on a Honda you have to do that. That could be the whole thing. If not it's running rich at idle but not at higher speeds. That can often be dribbling fuel injectors which then act better when the car goes faster is it using up so much gas then it doesn't really matter

Thank you i will go for an adjustment as soon as possible. About the injectors I got original reconditioned ones and took out my old ones. It could as you say the valve adjustment as prior to replacing the seals there at idle it would read much less and sometimes 0. May I also ask if the hesitation I get at full throttle could be related to this?

Scotty doesn't answer questions more than once, unfortunately. Maybe somebody else who has a Civic can be of help.

it's supposed to be around 1

It sounds like there's absolutely nothing wrong with your car. If it's not broken then don't fix it.
