Hey, I have a 2001 toyota highlander, 265,000 miles. I was cruising down the freeway when my car started to shake and then I lost control. It was leaking from behind. We got it towed back home and checked underneath the car, there was a giant hole in the differential. I don't know how this happened. Explain to me how this even happened. Also put it in drive and couldn't drive it.

Also it was the awd version. Sorry I didn't mention that.

Oh man, what a ride huh?! Hopefully you can find a replacement differential.

The diff blew. Try to find one at a junkyard or straight from Toyota. Its pretty uncommon for these I wouldn't second guess a junkyard part.

The gears inside the case blew apart and took some of the case with it.

Did you check the differential fluid in the past? You might have dirty fluid with metal debris and they locked up the differential.
