Should I change my ATF?

Hey Scotty!

I have a 2012 Honda Accord LX, automatic transmission with 103K miles on it. In my past two oil changes, the inspection came back saying that I needed a new transmission fluid. I know that you said it is bad to flush out the transmission when a car is high mileage, so should I go to a transmission shop and get a drain and fill job instead?

Also when I first turn on my engine cold, my car idles at 1500 RPM. And whenever I start to slow down my rpm decreases and has a quick surge then starts to decrease again. It usually decreases and surges twice before a complete stop. This happens every single time I slow down. I tried cleaning my throttle body out and that did not work.

Thanks!

You should be good to go for a regular ATF drain & fill -

1500rpm for a few minutes on a cold start is completely normal, as long as it subsides to around 700-800rpm once the engine has reached operating temperature.

Your transmission behaviour sounds normal too, when coasting to a halt.

All the best!
