Honda oil diution

Scotty, I have owned a 2000 Honda Accord and now own a 2014 Honda Accord. You can smell the gasoline in the oil when you change oil on either of these. The oil level will increase substantially between oil changes on the 2014 Accord. I recently purchased a RAV4 rather than a Honda CRV specifically because I have read reports that the CRV had oil dilution problems and other technical features that I prefer in the RAV4. Few experts are speaking out about Honda’s oil dilution problems. Can you shed some light on this.

How often are you changing your engine oil?

On the 2014 Accord I use 0W-20 full synthetic as specified in the manual. I do the oil and filter at 3 months or 3,000 miles WCF. It is driven primarily by my wife who does a lot of very short trips so that is a factor but trust me the oil dilution is extreme.

Scotty has already made a couple of videos on Honda's oil dilution issues.

It is important to note that not all cases are bad. I have very minor dilution on my 2020 Accord 2.0T and none on my 2021 Ridgeline. As long as you stay on top of your oil changes (full synthetic, 1 year/5k mile intervals) it's not really a problem.
