Hi Scotty.  Are the Honda 10 speed automatic transmissions in the Accord and the new Acura TLX any good?  I feel like Honda wasn't aiming for top reliability, but can you go wrong with this transmission?  Thanks

The Honda 10 speed was first used in the Odyssey and spread to other Honda/Acura models. I recommend looking to see if Honda had any transmission problems with the Odyssey and other models.

The Odyssey 10 speed automatics were one of the most troubled ones out there, with constant issues in the 2018+ model years. None recorded in the Accord until this date. The ZF 9 speed in Acura models from around 2015/2016 have proven troublesome wiht many short term issues, the newer ones (+10 speed) are better in that regards but no one knows how long they will last long-term because they are new.

You are right, Honda's priorities have shifted from reliability and conservative design to performance and efficiency. The engine in the new Accord is dissapointing to me as well. I personally am against the school of thought whatever lunatic used to design the 2018+ Accord, but that's just me. I have to admit they are less boring and more fun and "premium" than before, and some people might like that. But I've always known Toyota & Honda to be conservative and use the "kaizen" method to fix kinks and make quality products, and leave the "fun" cars to Mazda, "capable" cars to Subaru, etc...

An Accord 2.0T with a manual would be a nice lease though;)

In all fairness, from a pure reliability standpoint, I would prefer the CVT transmission over the 10 speed automatic as that is more "proven" and should last a good 150-200k miles if cared for, while the 10 speed automatic's longevity is unknown.
Keep in mind this transmission in the Odyssey had hundreds of thousands vehicles RECALLED because of problems, and both the Camry and Accord 8+ speeds are having software issues. Its more of a luck situation. I'm sure some will break at 5000 miles, and some will be at 200k miles.

What @Kerem said. He knows his stuff!

Likewise, I do appreciate Honda and Toyota using “kaizen”, hence my username.

Thanks, appreciate the comment!
Toyota definitely knows how to interpret 'Kaizen'. Honda... maybe? not so much in their new designs...
