Horn Problems & Left Control Panel Falling Apart

Horn hasn't worked for years,  I just yell out the window when I need to,  New York style.

It's not the fuses and I haven't located it under the hood yet.  2000, 250k , I'm sure it's falling apart from the steering wheel.

I'm my own mechanic,  I don't go to them anymore unless they're Scotty.

Never dismantled a steering wheel before. But I'm going to start there and work to the engine to replace the horn right?

This has nothing to do with the steering column right?

Think I can get away with finding a bad connection and splicing in some new wires?

Or with a car this old, is it truly just time for a new horn?

If the latter, then can I get away with a junkyard one or should I just go full stock and do it correct?

Never done this before,  Scotty, and I have no idea what it's gonna cost.  But definitely wanna learn how.  Thanks!

It said Gateway Timeout, but guess it did post. Hope it doesn't shoot through 7 times cause I only hit it once.  Never saw that before.

It came through OK. The internet is being pummeled by AI bots scraping web sites for every piece of data they can grab. This can cause that kind of problem.

What I've always done with something like a bad horn circuit in an old beater is to just to wire around the problem and install a new fused circuit with a horn switch placed in some convenient spot.

@chucktobias Thanks man. A few buddies suggested that too. Wanna do it as a last resort cause I wanna fix my Coast and get a replacement panel for the left side. For everything going wrong all at once, I think it's a bundle of issues not just the horn.

Do inspection places usually care about horns not working? Our old gangsta mechanic didn't didn't care about nothing. If you can roll into his garage and slap a $20 and the occasional six pack in his hands, he'll ask you how your day was and immediately just slap the sticker onto your car. Gonna miss that man for the rest of my life. Other mechanics here can't stand him cause he's WV's best.

It would be cool to do the horn button thing. I will if I have to. Have a good night bro

Inspection requirements vary wildly by state. Some check safety items. Some check only emissions. Some have no inspections at all.

Forgot to say that the left control panel is from what I remember, the up and down to set the acceleration and coast on the right hand side.

While I'm at it,  I don't think Coast even works by now too. Used to use it all the time cross country.

So I'm thinking is it really just the horn or the entire face of the steering wheel.  She steers fine,  that's just all she wants to do these days haha
