How compatible are engines and transmissions/transaxle?

Given any random modern transverse engine and transaxle (or longitudinal engine and transmission) how compatible are they with each other?

Is it more plug and play mating? Or more of modifications needed to make them fit together?

Are there any that are notoriously incompatible?

I would let the engineers think about the compatability of the powertrain components.

If the engineers are smart, they will do that for you. If the engineers are from Ford, gg.

Haha. I see Aisin and ZF transmissions used all over the place, so there has to be at least some compatibility.

The issue is about all the sensors and connections. The modern powertrains are over-engineered which makes the swapping a difficult/impossible job to do.

Just like most of your questions, Kaizen, this one is very complicated and isn't easily answered in a forum post.

Generally speaking, a given engine or transmission is only compatible with a few other types. For every day use, swapping is usually not worth the trouble.

Why do you ask?

Tough question totally. There was a recent “can I use this transmission on this car” questions.
