Hi Scotty,
I took my 96 4Runner to a shop for an engine rebuild. The owner of the shop said the job would take a few weeks. It’s been over a month and every time I call for an update all I get is that they are “working on it” I ask for a date when the job will be done and the guy throws a day out and when the date comes, my car isn’t ready. Should I tell them to stop work and to tow it back to my home? Or should I wait for however long and pay the guy and never go back? Thanks for the advice.
Yes, they either can't do it or won't do it. My educated guess is if they do rebuild it, it will be a botched job. Find a reputable independent shop, with a good history, and have it towed there, rather than home.
Remind them that the car is your property and you are paying them. have them set a date for when the car will be ready or take it to another shop. I would put the car on a tow truck and send it to another shop with a trustworthy mechanic. Good Luck!
You better go to the shop and see what they're actually up to with your engine. If I was in your position, I would have drove straight to the shop after the first call. If they actually started the engine rebuild, then come to an agreement on the date it will be done. If they didn't even start the rebuild, then take it somewhere else and don't pay them for anything.
I’m driving there tomorrow. I told the guy I need it done tomorrow because he said there was only 2 hours of work left to be done and when I called two hours later he never answered. If the car isn’t done I’m having it towed back to my house because I’ll look for a good mechanic in my local area. This guys is 2 and a half hours away from my home. Do I pay him for what work he’s done or do I not pay him at all?
@cesar661
You're going to have to talk with them and see what work they've done so far. You're most likely going to have to pay for the new parts at the very least.
I think they are waiting for an used engine.
Did you ask them why it's taking so much longer than expected?
I did he said they’re going to test the car and make sure everything works. That it’ll be a couple hours to do. He isn’t answering the phone and I’ve been calling multiple times and it’s been longer than 2 hours.
I'd go down there and see WTF was going on.
