hi Scotty, what do you think about 1992 3,8 v6 Pontiac trans sport s engine, automatic transmission and especially "tuned port injection" system, are they reliable?
The 3.8 engine is a great design. However, the transmission is a weak point. If the car is from the salt belt you'd need to check very carefully for rust. At 30 years old so much could have happened to that thing that only a good mechanic can verify whether it's still in good condition. At a minimum any original rubber parts (brake hoses, fuel hoses, coolant hoses, etc.) will need replacement. Depending on your needs it's questionable whether any 30-year-old car is going to be reliable for daily use. Lots of aged components and wiring to cause problems. You have not mentioned mileage, price, or whether it's a private sale or stealership deal.
It can be tough to find a mechanic that will be willing to work on a car that old because it lacks OBD2 diagnostics. You'd need a Tech2 scan tool to work with it. (Either that or an OBD1 scan tool - that is, a paperclip.)
thanks Mr. Chuck Tobias
