Modern cars have systems that tell when the oil needs changing, but do they have sensors that monitor how dirty the oil is or does the computer just go by the mileage?

From what I understand, it is a guesstimate based on mileage and how hard the engine has been run. It doesn’t really check to see if the oil is dirty, TMK.
