Hybrid Mid Size SUVs

Hi Scotty,

I'm considering buying a Hybrid Midsize SUV. I'm comparing the Toyota Rav4, Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, or even Kia Sorento.

Would you recommend a Hybrid? I live in CA and the gas prices are the highest in the U.S., so I'm trying to spend less on gas.

Which model(s) would you suggest?

Thank you,

Doug

Stay away from Hyundai/Kia products.

For Hybrid, I usually recommend Toyota, and for compact/mid sized SUV, the RAV4 hybrid. Which is a great vehicle, based on the Camry hybrid platform. Which is a pretty resilient platform.

But I got to ride in a Honda CRV Hybrid, and I was totally amazed by the whole package. The interior, the exterior, the ride quality.  And the hybrid technology itself is compelling, because it is practically an EV below 45 mph. Above 45 mph, it uses the gas engine.

With that said, it is hard to say if the CRV hybrid will be reliable since the technology is so new. The RAV4 technology has been time tested for a while now. I do trust the Honda brand more so than other brands besides Toyota.

I’m not too familiar with Subaru. I believe they are more like mild hybrids, rather than true hybrids.

I usually steer away from Hyundai/Kia. (Although there EV tech is something to watch.)

My mother has a 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid and she loves it. Zero problems and she was also considering the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, but she likes CR-V better than the RAV4, which she also road tested. Just giving some pointers here as the CR-V and RAV4 are both great cars.
