Topic starter

I am in the market for a 3rd Gen (2007-2017) Ford Expedition with the 5.4L V8 that is under 200k miles. What should I look out for particularly? Saw an 07 Expedition EL for sale on FB mktplace for $5.5k 197k miles private seller. Owner said oil chsnge every 5k and tranny fluids at 80k and 160k.

  • I plan to take it to a mechanic to check it out. I am in Houston as well so if anyone could point me to a good mechanic in Houston (it's a shame since Scotty isn't in toen anymore) that'd be appreciated as well. Been watching Scotty since I was a kid and love the forum.
  • Thanks

Well I'm not a fan of those explorers, but actually they're decent vehicles with the V8 engine. So just make sure you have a good mechanic. Check it out before you buy. Realized with higher mileage, though it probably will need the transmission overhauled that's the weakest point

Thanks. I am not a big fan of newer Explorers either. Except the older ones with the V8 (aiming for a V8 vehicle since I do havw plans to do some heavy loads down the road).

Althought I am looking at Expeditions, not Explorers. Are the 10th Gen Suburbans better?

Saw a couple more private listings today for both Expeditions and Suburbans around the $7k mark between 150k and 170k miles.

@scottykilmer Update: bought an 09 Expedition EL Limited with 99,500 miles for $8500 private sale. A mechanic oked it.

After I bought it it idled rough a little right after startup for a few days and then I took it on the highway. Now idles fine. Went on vacation let the truck sat for 3 weeks. Idled rough once again after startup. Issue gone again after 30 mins of hwy driving. 300 miles so far so good. Bout to do first oil change with 99803 miles on the clock.

Will try to update my situation on this threads for others to see as time passes.
