Hey Scotty!
Im looking for my first EV , mainly for commute (max 25 miles per day), planing to change home from outlet or charging station (me and my wife renting a house so installing level 2 charging make no sense) . She have a gas suv so long trip would be on her vehicle. What you can recommend something reliable?
Thank you!
I don't think you'll find a reliable one under 18k . The only way to get one that cheap is if the battery needs replacing, and those batteries go for $20k plus. Twenty grand buys a lot of fuel.
just from stories I hear, I get the impression the Leaf is the most reliable.
Same.
In this price range I also see some E-golf’s , I3 bmw and Chevrolet Bolt/Volts. Heard anything about them ?
max 25 miles per day
that's about 260 gal of fuel per year or about $980.
For $18k you can easily get a nice used prius or other hybrid.
Is saving less than $1k in fuel really worth paying so much more for an EV??
Will it EVER make up that difference?
You might try your luck with a Chevy Bolt EUV, but that's about it. They don't even make them anymore, because they were so badly made. They had recalls for the cars catching on fire while charging and they burned people's garages down. I highly don't recommend owning one. Here's one that meets our needs as far as price, but it has 60k miles on it. 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV LT FWD - $17,815 - CarGurus
You might try a used Tesla? The bottom falls out from electric cars once they get to be a used car, so you might be able to buy a minimally equipped one for fairly cheap, with lower miles. I don't like Teslas, I think they're awkwardly designed as far as ergonomics. Newer ones don't have conventional dashboard-mounted gauges, all of that is featured on a screen, which takes your eyes off the road, I think. They did it to be different, and now all of the other manufacturers think it's cool to plaster iPad-sized touchscreens on their cars' dashboards, which I think is incredibly tacky. I'd rather keep the $18k and spend it on something that's a gas saver, like a Corolla or Camry.
I saw some teslas most of the it’s models S first gen (2012-2014) and 2018 model 3 , both usually 90k+ miles. Idk if that a good options, considering how much repair can cost with out manufacturing warranty
Unless you're buy a brand-new electric car, I wouldn't advise getting a used one. You need to be an electrician in order to work on it.
