Hi everybody first time post here, thanks for all the insight in advance. I am currently in the market for a new family hauler (we’re tool cool for mini vans) and we’ve landed on either a 17’ F150 Lariat (5.0, 6Speed, 40/20/40 front bench) and a 3 row 4Runner limited (2019-2021ish). Likely going through a dealer, for the sake of local availability.
Test drove the 4Runner, I like how it handled, but the windshield felt small, things felt slightly cramped, and was hoping for a bit more power on the freeway, it felt just a bit sluggish (I’m not speed racer but I was hoping for a little bit more ‘get up and go’). Otherwise I love Toyotas reputation, and it’s great off-road capability (not doing much off-roading right now). The limited also has great features and looks sweet!
F150 felt right (from a comfort standpoint), it was truly a car made for a larger person lol. Also super spacious in the back seats. My only worry with the Ford is it’s dependability, I don’t want a car that needs more than normal maintenance. I do love the idea of having a bed, and a beefier platform. That being said I’ve heard the 17 5.0 with a 6 speed is quite reliable…
I know this is all might be subjective, but which car would you chose, considering longevity, comfort, price, and performance? I know these platforms might be apples to oranges, but they both will serve a similar purpose for me.
Also, is a warranty worth it? Is it a waste, is it a good idea buying used? Never bought used before.
You have found the downsides to the 4Runner, and it seems you have done your research well. I love a 4Runner, but decided against it much for the same reasons.
Have you considered the 4Runner's half brother the Lexus GX?
I got the GX470 because for the price, it was about the same, but it rides great on long trips, and handles wonderfully.
It has just as good off road capability, and nice big windshield for visibility.
It is also basically a land cruiser Prado. It does have some more expensive components in it, like the brake master cylinder, but they are very reliable, more so than the Ford.
The prices of a GX are often more, but if you keep your eyes open for a deal, you may can find it.
