Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) Problems

Being a prior owner of a 2015 Hyundai Elantra. The overall QC is just not there. I will say the Korean manufactured vehicles seem to be better than the ones out of the Alabama plant. However, there is ample proof that Kia/Hyundai have big issues building motors incorrectly. They just can’t seem to figure it out. And that 100k mi warranty, Hyundai will fight you to the death over anything failing prematurely. They’ve tried skirting past the fact they are having to replace all these motors that are catching fire and all the other issues they’re dealing with.

"Over the last several years, Kia and Hyundai have recalled more than 6.5 million vehicles for defects that could cause fires including models from 2010 all the way to brand new 2021 vehicles"

Kia went bankrupt TWICE in 1997 and 2007, and had to be rescued by Korean banks and Hyundai both times. It wouldn't surprise me if it happens to them again.
Kia shares:

KIA AND HYUNDAI ARE TOTAL CRIMINALS ON THIS!!!! Do a quick google search and you'll see in April of '22 a Class action lawsuit has FINALLY been brought against Hyundai / Kia for EVERY 4 cylinder car they've made in the last 10 years and , because of car shortage , they are totally getting away with this. It's NOT normal. It is a risk of fire with excessive oil. It will destroy the mass air flow sensor, any one who says "Just add oil" has no idea what they are talking about. My new 2020 Soul only had 9,000 on it and started burning 1/2 quart every 1,000 miles. Sold it that day! DO NOT EVER buy a Kia. The "fix" aka, software is a "knock sensor" which means "IF" it even works, and I know no-one that's ever seen the sensor notify, it would bee too late.... if the pistons are knocking, at the point the engine is already destroyed. EVERY SINGLE 2.0 KIA engine should be replaced. The service tech at the Horne Kia in Gilbert AZ could not hold a straight face after I brought the car in 2 times. I went to to buy an oil filter and was talking the the parts guy at the same dealer.... told me he was looking for a new job... It was non stop people coming in with the same oil burning problem. Thanks for letting me bitch and moan LOL. There are so few places talking about this and it's wrong. Kia Souls 2020 through 2022 have an engine defect and burn oil. Do not buy!!!
guys watch this video documentary by CBC done in Canada exposing Hyundai and Kia poor quality engine fires and recalls.
@abrar7478 finally this is getting out there more. Hyundai/Kia are a despicable company that knowingly makes garbage and tries to cover it up. I hope everyone watches that documentary.
Another HMG employee blows the whistle.
Kia's disregard for human safety is disgusting
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsNcpuBmTnI
The U.S. government’s road safety agency has paid more than $24 million to a whistleblower who reported that Hyundai and Kia moved too slowly to recall over 1 million vehicles with engine problems.
...
A week after those fines were issued, Kia and Hyundai recalled 130,000 vehicles in the U.S. The complications stemmed from a manufacturing issue that could cause the connecting rod bearings to wear out and the engines to fail, Hyundai said. A damaged connecting rod could puncture the engine block, causing the engine to stall. It also could let oil leak onto hot surfaces, increasing the risk of a fire.
Engine failure and fire problems with Hyundais and Kias have plagued the companies for more than five years, affecting the owners of more than 8 million vehicles.

February 25, 2025 - The 2021 recall involving Kia Soul and Kia Seltos vehicles with the 2.0L Nu engines has been extended up to 2023 vehicles (another 137,000 units). The piston rings were not heat treated properly. This leads to damage to the piston and cylinder, seized connecting rod bearing, and ultimately causing the block to become punctured, and oil leaking out onto hot exhaust components, and fire.
Kia engine piston ring recall letters are expected to be mailed April 4, 2025.
.
Kia claimed years ago that the heat-treating process was corrected with engines produced as of June 30, 2020.

Motor Biscuit:
"[T]he Kia Forte is the second most complained about Kia car. According to the data compiled, the worst model year is the 2010 Kia Forte. This model experiences engine problems as well.
However, the model year with the most complaints of all is the 2012 Kia Forte. The most-reported problem is with the 2010 Kia Forte. Apparently, this model year deals with a knocking sound when the vehicle is operating."
"The worst Kia Optima model year is the year 2011. Like the other two cars on this list, the Kia Optima deals with engine problems. The model year with the highest volume of complaints overall is the 2013 Optima. The most-reported problem is engine failure in that 2013 model year.
The three worst problems for the Kia Optima are all related to issues with its engine. The number 1 worst problem, for instance, is engine failure for the 2011 Kia Optima at 102,000 miles. This issue costs about $4,600 to repair. The 2015 model year, however, costs even more at $6,000 according to the data on CarComplaints.com. It also occurs at a lower mileage of around 61,000 miles."
"The Kia Rio is the third most complained about Kia car... This model experiences engine problems. In fact, engine problems are considered to be the worst problem for the Kia Rio."
My father-in-law just had his 17 Elantra'e engine blown up, with 60k miles, regular oil change.

My daughter has a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Within warrantee timing but 2nd owner. Didn’t receive recall notice and because she is so young, can not afford to take her car to the dealer for maintenance. 2 months after the engine recall ended, her engine broke. We have appealed and appealed in a million ways to Hyundai and they won’t help her. For what could be life long loyalty for her and the chance for her to spread good words about Hyundai, they refuse to help at all. This leaves a 20 year old without a car and all of our friends and family a bad taste regarding Hyundai. Hyundai clearly admits to the world they made a s*** engine yet refuse to fix it or even help to fix it.
I will tell you from personal experience that they do not engineer cars properly. Take for instance my sisters Veracruz I have worked on a few times. They put the alternator below the head and they had a recall because the valve cover gaskets leak onto the alternator. I replaced one alternator unknown that there was a recall and it was a 6 hour job to remove all the cooling fans to get the thing out of there. Then a couple years later the one I replaced went bad again. I went to the internet and found the recall and thankfully they replaced the valve cover gasket and the alternator at no charge. It also fried the battery which was fortunately under warranty as it was only a year old. The rear brake calipers kept locking causing the rotors and brakes to overheat. On a vehicle with just over 100,000 miles. I have had my share cars in the past and put many miles on them. Things happen, I get it. But people need to understand that morons in charge of engineering and designing these cars have no clue what their doing. I would never buy one of these things. Plus, a drunk ran a red light and took the front off her car. We found a mechanic to patch it up but parts are hard to find as this guy had to order parts from Europe to get everything working again.

@imperator Hageman vs. Hyundai
TLDR Hyundai tried to be sleazy and use a loophole to force people into private arbitration and the courts struck down and said no. A win for us but that’s why you don’t buy a Hyundai in the first place.

2016 Hyundai Sonata.
Disposable car; ready for the crusher

2014 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T remains to this day the only car I have driven that the motor blew up in while I was driving. At 38k miles. Nobody can run fast enough to sell me a Korean car.
My own relative became a victim couple of years ago. She was stuck in a traffic jam in Montréal and thats when her 2010 Tucson caught fire and added more chaos and panic to already fed up and exhausted drivers stuck in traffic around her.
2013 Hyundai Sonata 2.0t : Honestly my favorite car. It was fast and fun, and very comfortable. But out of nowhere, it caught on fire while I was driving down the freeway. Never buying a Hyundai again
My sister's 2016 Hyundai Sonata has 69,000 miles and is already burning 1 quart of oil. Working on that car is a pain. A vehicle should not be having this type of problem at that mileage.
