Car has 61,000 miles, oil was changed on time but it started making this rattle/knock on cold start. Anyone know why it could be? Thank you.

This guys is saying he is the second owner and Hyundai extended his warranty to 8yrs/80k. And they replaced his engine. Hope It helps.
Get rid of it as fast as you can, while someone unfortunate is still attracted to its age & low mileage.
If that’s really rod knock on a 61,000 mile engine, which has had regular oil changes, I have nothing more to say.
I can't say for sure, but that sounds like rod knock to me. Time to get rid of it.
@InThrustWeTrust is right. The quality speaks for itself.
I'd 1. have your mechanic check it out see what's up and 2. put it up on craigslist as soon as possible and see what you get offered. Those Sonatas are infamous for engine problems and you would have heck of a time getting to 100k miles. 3. Pray at night you get offered a decent amount 4. Never buy a Kia/Hyundai vehicle again
Sure wish I could get rid of this clunker. Still own another 2 years on it.
Well man good luck, odds are the engine will blow up sometime in the next 20-30k miles and your non-existent warranty won't be honored. Now I have to admit the car looks very nice might as well park it up on your lawn and let your kids use it as a playground.
Get rid of the car.
Take it to the dealer. That should be covered under the 10yr/100k warranty. Could be valve train noise or bottom end.
It’s out of warranty.
Hyundai have 10yr/100k warranty. Your car is only 6yrs old with 61k. How can it be out of warranty?
That’s only for new ones, It doesn’t transfer.
Manufacturers warranty does not matter if you are the 1st owner or the 10th. As long as you are within the time or mileage.
It totally does. If you buy it used, you only get 5 years and 60,000 miles. The warranty expired last year.
Someone is pulling a fast one on you. I would take it to another dealer. I assumed you took it to one already. Dealers hate doing warranty work because they don’t make any money on it. Techs hate it too because they don’t get the same pay as if it was a customer pay, I used to work at Toyota dealer and I hated doing warranty work. Some of it was worth it but when it comes to engine mechanical problems a lot of the times they don’t pay they hours that it takes.
Nobody’s pulling a fast one. The warranty only transfers if it’s Hyundai Certified pre owned which this car was not.

Wow! That sucks I guess that’s recent. I had customer who I sent to Hyundai for warranty work and she was the second owner. I’m in California don’t know if that made a difference. I know Cali has some strong consumer protection laws.
Doesn't matter if you're in California or China, Hyundai does not transfer their warranty past the first owner unless the 2nd buyer purchased it as Certified Pre-Owned. Been that way since at least 2006. Everybody LOVES to sing the praises of their warranty. But nobody reads the fine print.
@g-h Just curious, do you check your oil level yourself? If so, does your car lose any oil either through an oil leak or by burning it?
Yes, it burns like 1 1/2 - 2 quarts between oil changes.
@g-h Thank you so much for replying! I have a good friend of mine that has the same car, but with 41k miles. No engine knock yet, but it burns about the same amount of oil. It also had premature failures of the hood latch & the hood struts, which is very abnormal for this young of a vehicle.
I noticed mine was super low the first time at 42,000 miles. It’s just absolutely ridiculous. I actually just got the oil changed today and they said it was a quarter and 1/2 low. Maybe mine will quite down now but probably not I’m sure. It doesn’t seem like it so far. The hood struts failed at 4x,000 miles and the motor mount went bad with 5x,000 miles. It creaks and rattles over pot holes. It’s just a complete POS car.
All these guys apparently aren’t aware of the fact that all 2.0T and 2.4 theta 2 GDi engines are included in a class action lawsuit and now have a lifetime warranty extension on the short block which also contains the rod bearings which is what fails in these engines. Many reports in the early years around 2014 or so yes many owners that went past 100k and weren’t lucky enough to get the engine under goodwill warranty had to pay out of pocket which has now been reimbursed under the settlements. Now all owners no matter if you’re the 10th owner and the car has 200k and it’s 9 years old. Most Hyundai-Kia vehicles with the gasoline direct injected version of the theta 2 (not to be confused with the theta 2 mpi like in the 2006-2010 sonata and 2011 Kia Sorento) all have lifetime warranties if you make sure the “product inprovment” has been performed which includes a knock sensor upgrade and the dip stick should be a reddish orange color not yellow! But yours is the 2015+ so it’s not yellow and I’m sure the improvement has been performed already. Your engine has a lifetime warranty. The only thing is your time away from your car. Many now are only without their cars for a few weeks or so used to be months but overtime things (some dealers might be worse) improved.
It’s also good to note that it’s to the point that some Hyundai techs on the internet are commenting jokes saying “Hyundai will still warranty it” because at this point the issue is so prevalent that even owners neglect doesn’t matter they’ll still replace the engine. Dealer sends in pictures of the oil and metal debris and all that and it’s almost instant approval from Hyundai (years ago it wasn’t the case but is now). When my mom recently bought her 2016 Sonata limited the dealer warned her not to open the panoramic roof while driving at high speeds because the roof can fly off which it states in the owners manual but a customer done so and Hyundai covered it anyway despite it being a clear drivers error, but told our dealer from now on to tell customers not to open it at high speeds. They’re not the worst company ever!

Well it’d be wonderful if you could help out fellow member @g-h to get his engine replaced free of charge by Hyundai, in that case.
