Hello guys! my 100k mile Hyundai sonata has recently begun burning oil. I've deduced that it is burning oil and not leaking because after doing a fluorescent leak test, no leaks were observed and my oil level still continued to decrease (I need to add about half a quart a week). So far I have conducted a compression test (Normal), changed my PCV valve, used CRC carbon treatment & fuel additives. I'd also like to mention that I'm regularly changing the oil and using Mobil 1 5W20 and regularly add a bottle of Lucas thin oil stabilizer. So far the car still burns oil. Any help?
First and foremost, quit using additives or anything else to get it to stop. That could void the warranty. Those 2.4l and 2.0l thata engines are known for excessive oil consumption and failure. They have a life time warranty. Take it to the dealer and ask them to preform an oil consumption test. If it burns at least a quart of oil per 1000 miles, they will replace the engine with a remanufactured engine. If it doesn’t qualify for an engine replacement now, then so be it. The whole thing will fail soon and they will have to replace it then. Good luck.
I was told the life time engine warranty is only for the rod bearing. The dealership did an oil consumption test and deemed a problem yet it is not a warranty item.... what life time warranty are you referring to, what does it cover? And how do I see if I can get it applied
Unfortunately this is a pretty typical late-model Hyundai experience. It stinks, that's the most family-friendly way it can be described.
With used car prices at an all time high it might be time to sell it off or trade it in and buy something more reliable like a Toyota or Honda. (Yes, I know there have been years those brands have had problems but not as consistently or for as long as Hyundai/Kia.)
Unless I'm missing something..if you had bad rings, or valve seals, it would make the compression be lower...unless it's the valve guides
Oil control rings can wear out while compression rings are still good.
True, I knew I was overlooking an issue
